So, dispossessed, bewildered and weeping, the Pukaki people were forced to walk off the marae that had been sold against their wishes. He sounded such a bracing contrast to the politeness and delicacy of my own acquaintances that it seemed a visit to him might be an adventure, and out to Pukaki Road I went.

I could see no signs. In what I had written there had been at least an implied complaint that airport work had cut the Pukaki people off from their food supply in the two nearby creeks. This also, said the lessee, was more bullshit. Other members of the tribe, camping for weeks in the town while the court sat, found equally easy credit. The cases went on month after month.

The money usually went for rum and the whole of the time was spent in debauchery. The strength which lies in union was taken from them.
