The Hutt County Council , established in , covered the region from Wellington's south coast up to Waikanae, excluding the Wellington City Council area. As the region grew, urban parts of the Hutt County became autonomous boroughs: Petone in , Lower Hutt in , Eastbourne in , Johnsonville in , Upper Hutt in , Porirua in and Kapiti in In Lower Hutt became a city. It incorporated Normandale in The city centres on the lower southern valley of the Hutt River , to the northeast of the city of Wellington. The valley widens into a delta as the river nears its mouth, so the central urban area of the city forms a triangle with its longest side along the shoreline.

Lower Hutt includes the cluster of small settlements that extend down the eastern coast of Wellington Harbour. These include the two large townships of Wainuiomata inland and Eastbourne on the coast. The city also includes a large area of sparsely-populated land to the east of the harbour, extending to Pencarrow Head and into the Remutaka Range. Lower Hutt occupies the lower regions of the flood plain of the river, one of the most significant features [ citation needed ] of the city.

In the 20th century the Hutt River Board built stopbanks to contain the river, [10] but the threat of flooding from heavy rainfall persists. In the river burst its banks, and since then floods have been on a smaller scale. Smaller streams and storm-water drains have also caused occasional problems when rainfall exceeds average levels. Much of the land adjacent to the river is protected as reserve by the City Council and managed by the Greater Wellington Regional Council to provide popular recreational areas.

With lower river-levels in mid-summer, algal blooms have contributed to making slow-flowing areas anoxic. The Regional Council has cited the algal blooms as the cause of death of a small number of dogs swimming in the river, as well as of skin reactions in the case of swimmers.

Ferries run locally to Wellington. Didn't have much time to explore, but was disappointed with readily available services. Had to travel to Petone for a good restaurant. Found ourselves a bit lost at times and would probably stay in Wellington on future trips. Can access the city easily but not be in it,went to weta cave and Te papa as well as H2Go Extreme. The golf courses you can got to are all within 20min drive and are great. Picnic next to river, walks or chasing your kids along the pathways. Lower Hutt is a rough part of Wellington with a high number of car break-ins, drug problems, gang issues and a lot of welfare beneficiaries and unemployed people with mental health problems.

Dishonest crime is high there so don't keep any valuables in your car or your room. But it is nice during the day if you visit Petone Beach and the cafes. I've stayed with nice Indian and Asian people in Lower Hutt, but be careful of New Zealanders due to the high drug use in the area.

Everything you need is there without having to go to the city and pay big city prices. Lots of bars, cafes, shops and queens gate mall. Petone foreshore has a quaint settlements museum and a wide boardwalk for running or walking. My wife and I stayed here. We liked the quietness and comfortable environment of the hotel around.

The rooms are large and comfortable for sleeping. Bathrooms were always clean and easily accessible. Perfect location for walking to nightlife, restaurants, shopping, and tourist attractions.

One of the most memorable trips we've taken… we would definitely return. Very well run campsite, we stayed in a cabin, it was very clean and comfortable. The campsite was full for Eminem concert but everyone was well behaved and very quiet after the concert. Although not in central Wellington, we enjoyed exploring the nearby coastline, lots to do if you enjoy the outdoors.

Wellington 15 minutes away by car and easy to find parking. Cannot fault Ava Lodge, it was a fantastic place to stay! Very warm welcome, with lots of helpful suggestions about where to eat and how to get into Wellington for us to catch the ferry the next morning. Nothing was too much trouble and we had a really comfortable stay. Highly recommended! This hotel exactly like the pictures.

Modern, spacious, clean, quiet and in a good location. Close to Queensgate mall and train station. The hosts were very friendly and obliging. We would definitely stay again if we need accommodation in Lower Hutt. Great value! The day we arrived in Wellington is very hot and the room is nice and clean but NO aircon. I ask staff but never get back from them. Very disappointed!

We stay here when we are in Lower Hutt because it is super clean and such an easy check in and out. Nice recliners in lounge. Hotel felt very safe especially at night. Asure 83 by the sea was easy to locate and access from our trip from the airport. We were meet by a friendly and helpful staff member and our unit was easy to find and had parking available. The unit was clean and well furnished for our needs and quiet overnight. An enjoyable stay and we would use Asure again.
