Lots of walks to explore. Gore is the gateway to the lakes and a lovely town to explore. The Mataura river is beautiful and therapeutic and relaxing to watch. The Information Centre has all the information you need on what's happening in Gore and Southland. I just love how well maintained the town is - lovely hanging baskets of flowers cascading down outside the shops, centre gardens with super colourful, interesting flowers etc. Beautiful town. Gore is easy to walk around, good art shops, generic take aways etc. People were friendly as well. Gore was my base to travel the lower South Island and I would advocate.

Bonus was that petrol was very cheap there which helped with my daily travels. The hosts were friendly. The farm animal were really cute and the cat was also super friendly.
